Lesson Title:Article Reviews
State Standards: GLEs/GSEs
National Standards:
Context of Lesson:
This Lesson gives me a chance to see how students work in groups. I think that this is a major skill that is used at the college level. I think students should be able to share ideas in groups like this. This lesson involves a modified jigsaw because when doing a jig saw each group would read a different article than other groups, but in this lesson each student can choose their own article to share and then with in the groups they will talk about each others articles. I believe that each subject needs to involve some form of literacy in the class so I plan to do this activity frequently. Overview of lesson, including: where it fits in unit, what are key ideas and what will students be doing.
Opportunities to Learn:
Depth of Knowledge
Webb's DOK- Level 1 Recall and Reproduction
This Lesson is a good chance to break away from what we are doing in class and explore different happenings in the scientific world. Students may take topics learned in previous classes and decide they would like to know more about a certain topic such as genetics so they could read a genetics article. It would be a step in the right direction for the students to be able to use information learned in class to understand their articles.
Prerequisite Knowledge
Prerequisite knowledge of topic not required
Plans for Differentiating Instruction
As a teacher I don't want to assume that students have internet access or even computers so I will differentiate for student's who are in this category, but I will try to make arrangements for students to be able to get article's themselves. I will Make groups so that I can control the amount of social talk, and encourage more on task behavior.
Accommodations and modifications
Environmental factors
Students will be in groups of 4 or 5 students
Materials
Students need articles
Students' need summaries
Students' need list of 5 main points
Objectives:
Groups will bring in articles with a science topic
Each member must write down main points they wish to share with their groups
Every group member will share their main points and also write down the main points from their partners articles
4 or 5 articles will be discussed by each group
Instruction:
Opening:
I will take attendance while students gather their materials together and get ready to get into groups. Once attendance has been take the students will get in groups and begin sharing. their articles. each student must share a brief synopsis of the article and his or her main points.
Engagement:
As the kids work with these articles I will walk around and listen in and when possible ask some questions that may aid in deep thinking on scientific articles. This activity should make students aware of different happenings in the scientific world and get them used to analyzing an article for whats important. This activity is mainly students centered but I will need to be active in order to make the exercise worth while.
Closure:
To close this activity out everyone will return to their seats and students will share any interesting article's they came across this week. I hope this will make students more comfortable getting involved in class. Once these article's have been finished and no one wants to share any longer I will finish by opening the floor to questions on the project etc.
Assessment:
Students' will be assessed on a short summary of their article
Students' will be assessed on 5 main points of their article to share with their group
